Text: Deuteronomy 4:1-9
Title: God's Law
Introduction:
Have you ever thought about the importance of laws?
Most governements have a legislative branch where laws are crafted and a judicial branch where laws are enforced.
Can you imagine a society without law and without law enforcement?
1) Stealing would be ok. Someone could come into your home and kick you out and assume possession of your things. Your children could also be taken against their will.
2) Murder would be fine.
3) embezzling/ tax evasion/
4) rape and child abuse would go unchecked
5) police if they exited would have no authority
6) Nobody could protect you - because there would be no legal authority.
7) The environment would suffer - no building standards, no laws against fly tipping, no emissions requirements or measures against air polution.
exp. Why when mankind is so smart and so advanced do we need law? Because of law breakers.
question:
Would you agree that the law is important for a better society and a better environment for mankind?
For that betterment of society to take place - there must be law and enforcement of that law.
exp. The point is THE LAW IS ALWAYS FOR OUR GOOD AND THE GOOD OF THOSE AROUND US.
ill. Trying to teach that to teens at a park in Bonnirigg - saying, "Name one sin that doesn't hurt somebody?" Stealing - "Then you won't mind if I take your necklace."
ill. A lot of people say lying - lady that sold me a 1.5 year old washer that was 5 years old. It cost me. (I learned not to buy electronics on gumtree.)
ill. Adultery/ divorce - destroy marriages and break apart families.
ill. Sexual sin often leads to sexual disease and the murder of babies in the womb.
ill. Drunkenness - girl "I'm afraid of drunks." It was her dad. (Funeral last year of man who died from alcohol - visit at hospital with girl who broke her back in several places.)
ill. I often point out to atheists - that the strongest nations in the world - not the biggest nations - have a legal system that is BASED UPON GOD'S LAW.
GOD'S LAW is of utmost importance to us today. It is important to us as individual, as families, as a church, for our society ect. So, this morning - from Deuteronomy 4 - Some facts Moses gave us about the law....
I. Fact 1 - God's law is to be learned.
1 Now therefore hearken, O Israel, unto the statutes and unto the judgments, which I teach you, for to do them, that ye may live, and go in and possess the land which the LORD God of your fathers giveth you.
exp. Moses has told Israel to Listen (hearken) and learn (I teach you.)
exp. Although God has put His law into our hearts - the law isn't purely intuitive or instinctual. It has to be learned.
Psa 119:130 The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.
exp. When you read it - then it opens your eyes to God's expectations.
ill. Arriving in the UK - been driving for nearly 20 years when we arrived. Having to take the test in the UK after a year - driving many months before studying. Often we would wonder, "What does that sign mean?" After studying telling Katie - "The signs are speaking to me now."
exp. I can tell you exactly what brought me to that fuller understanding and safer driving - hours of studying the book, watching the dvd, and practicing driving as it is instructed here - it is also what allowed us to pass the test the first time.
app. How do you study God's law? What time of day and on what days? How often do you go to the house of God?
Fact 1 - God's law is to be learned.
II. Fact 2 - God's law is to be unchanged.
2 Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.
A. You can't add to it.
ill. Pharisees wanted to add a clause to it.
Matthew 15:1 Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying,
2 Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.
3 But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?
4 For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.
5 But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;
6 And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.
exp. The Pharisees said a child could get away from God's law of provision for his parents by saying that his money was "Corban" a gift for God. Their tradition added to God's Word and violated God's Word.
ill. Friend of mine - church planting in Germany - says in their Catholic community - if a person makes a pilgrimage to a certain church they can obtain some indulgences to get their family out of pergatory sooner.
app. Guess what Catholic church and all other churches - you can't add to God's law.
B. You can't take away from it and please God.
2Ti 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
Matthew 5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
ill. Church of Scotland voted favorably on homosexual marriage for ministers - Following the vote, the Very Rev John Chalmers, principal clerk to the General Assembly, said: “Today’s decision means it will be possible for kirk sessions and congregations to depart from the traditional understanding of marriage to call not only potentially a minister in a civil partnership but one who is in a same-sex marriage.
“In some ways we crossed the Rubicon last year when it was agreed that kirk sessions could call someone in a civil partnership and for many people what today was about was simply tidying up and making the law of the church consistent with Scots law."
Mr Chalmers said a report on the Christian understanding of marriage would be presented to the General Assembly next year.
exp. In their editing of the Word of God the Church of Scotland has no doubt removed Deuteronomy 4:2 which commands them not to add to or diminish anything from God's Law.
LEVITICUS 18:22 AND 20:13 ARE STILL IN GOD'S BIBLE!
Lev 18:22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.
Lev 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination:
app. We are not wiser than or God. We can not improve upon His perfect Word. God's law - is God's law - He'll not be instructed by us. Gal 1:10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ. PAUL WASN'T A MAN PLEASER - HE WAS A GOD PLEASER AND DIDN'T SEEK TO INSTRUCT GOD.
fact 1 - The law must be learned.
fact 2 - The law is to be unchanged.
III. Fact 3 - God's law is for our protection.
3 Your eyes have seen what the LORD did because of Baalpeor: for all the men that followed Baalpeor, the LORD thy God hath destroyed them from among you.
4 But ye that did cleave unto the LORD your God are alive every one of you this day.
exp. The ten commandments
1.) Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
2.) Thou shalt not make unto hee any graen image.... thou shalt not bow down thyself to them or serve them....
exp. Israel had recently had a large group disobey these commands against idolatry.
quote: Gill's Exposition - "Your eyes have seen what the Lord did because of Baalpeor,.... Because of the idolatry the people of Israel fell into by worshipping that idol, being drawn into it by the daughters of Moab and Midian, through the counsel of Balaam, with whom they committed fornication; which led them to the other sin, and both highly provoking to God.....for all the men that followed Baalpeor, the Lord thy God hath destroyed them from among you; 24,000 persons died on that account; which being a recent thing, fresh in memory, and what they were eyewitnesses of, was a caution to them to avoid the same sins"
exp. The population of Midlothian is 88,000. If this many people in our community were judged by God for idolatry in the same way - 1/4 of the population would be dead as a result of God's judgment.
exp. Those who remained should stop and think - God is really serious about His law.
ill. Eddie - Irish Footballer - reading the Bible - saw that someone who collected sticks on the Sabbath was to be stoned - he realized that God is serious about sin.
app. I would remind us today that the Jealous God of the children of Israel is our God. His wratch is against those who violate His Word. God's law is for our protection against His wrath.
Fact 1 - God's law must be learned
Fact 2 - God's law is to be unchanged
Fact 3 - God's law is for our protection.
IV. Fact 4 - God's law is not optional.
5 Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it.
exp. Nobody could hear these words and say, "Well I don't think I'll go along with that. Or, well that is fine for you, but I'm just going to do my own thing." THESE ARE COMMANDMENTS FROM GOD "that ye should do so in the land."
exp. PRAISE GOD HE GAVE US A WILL. (We value that more than anything.) Although God gave us the ability to chose - there is only one correct choice when it comes to moral decisions.
ill. If I gave my children a law saying not to play in the road in front of our home - they have a choice whether or not to obey - BUT THERE IS ONLY ONE CORRECT CHOICE.
exp. There is only one correct choice when it comes to GOD'S COMMAND. obey
app. Did you know that even unbelievers/ atheists - will be judged by God according to His Word and their works? Revelation 20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
app. Friend - I hope you aren't there with these on their way to Hell - but if you are it would have been better for you to have attempted to keep God's law.
V. Fact 5 - God's law is identifying.
6 Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.
7 For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for?
8 And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?
exp. This nation was to be different from the heathen nations of their day.
1) They had put themselves under God.
2) They cared about one another and one another's property.
3) They were faithful in their marriages.
4) They put evil out of their society.
note - They didn't have Salvation by grace through faith or the indwelling person of the Holy Spirit to help them with this WE AS GOD'S CHURCH DO AND WE ARE EXHIBIT CHRIST TO A HEATHEN WORLD.
Mat 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Mat 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
ill. All the cities in Jerusalem are on hills - I didn't see a city in a valley that I recall. You could see the city lights from all around the area.
app. Our world ough to see your light from a long distance away. Is it evident that GOD'S GRACE HAS CHANGED YOUR LIFE FROM A LAW BREAKER TO A LAW KEEPER? Do people know you as a person who has God close to you meeting your needs?
VI. Fact 6 - God's law is personal.
9 Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons;
exp. NOTICE GOD'S LAW IS PERSONAL. IT IS FOR YOU! "take heed to thyself" "Keep thy soul diligently." "thine eyes, thy heart, thy life. thy son. thy sons' sons.

app. The truth today is that YOU NEED TO KNOW GOD'S LAW - It affects your heart, your life, opens your eyes, is needed by your children and grandchildren.
conclusion: Law is important
Civilation would become uncivilized if it wasn't for law and law enforcement.
God's law is important to ourselves, our family and our society.
1) How are you learning God's law? Psa 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
2.) Are you trying to change God's law and make acception for your sin? Psa 119:89 LAMED. For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.
3.) Are you in danger of judgment for violating God's law? God will be very precise.
4.) Do you think obeying God's law is optional? Gal 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. (You can play in the street but it is the wrong choice.)
5.) Do people know you are a child of God because you keep God's law? Obedience is evident.
6.) Have you realized the importance of God's law for you? Your eyes, heart, life, children....
And yet - even if you kept all of God's law today - you could never please Him - because you have already broken God's law.
There is a solution - JESUS PAID FOR EVERY TRANSGRESSION OF GOD'S LAW.

And yet - even if you kept all of God's law today - you could never please Him - because you have already broken God's law.
There is a solution - JESUS PAID FOR EVERY TRANSGRESSION OF GOD'S LAW.
